The statement issued to fans by Bill France Sr. on Sept. 13, 1969, after the driver walkout the day before the first Talladega 500 at what was then called Alabama International Motor Speedway. With the fans in mind, France was adamant there was going to be a race, and indeed there was after many drivers in Saturday’s Bama 400 NASCAR Touring event stayed over and competed on Sunday. The famous car carried his friend and driver - the late, great Dale Earnhardt - to his incredible, famed win in 2000 at ’Dega where he came from 18th to first in only four laps to lead at the white flag, and eventually the checkered.
